Contaminated land case study - Linwood, Renfrewshire

Renfrewshire Council has ordered an investigation of 300 households in Linwood, in a bid to discover whether they are situated on contaminated land.

Residents of properties built on the site of the former Sun iron foundary and Brediland chemical works first reported tar-like substances coming up to the surface back in 2007. Since then, the Council has carried out an environmental investigation on land surrounding the properties and the results have persuaded them that further investigation is required.

The next stage of the process will see contractors conduct a range of tests in the gardens of all the households concerned, to discover whether the land poses a risk to public health and the wider environment. The testing is likely to take place over an eight week period, and residents will then be left with an anxious wait before the results of the soil samples are made available.
